Have a fun and safe night!
This week we will continue with our Gold Rush texts. We will be reading the lyrics to a Klondyke Gold Rush song and studying the elements of poetry, reading an annotated map of the routes taken by the 49ers, and a letter giving us a woman's view of the gold rush. Book reports are due FRIDAY!!!!

Today in class we read Jack London's short story The King of Mazy May featured in this video. There will be a 14 question quiz over the story tomorrow. There will also be a quiz over the vocabulary handed out on Monday. Review them HERE. We had a great week learning about the Gold Rush!! We used the new school set of iPads to do research on Wednesday and it was AWESOME! Next week we will continue to read text from this period in history.
Book orders are due tomorrow. Good luck to the 6th Grade Perkins Bandits as they head to Chandler this Saturday! GO BANDITS! Book orders due Friday, Oct 28th
We are beginning a text set of 5 stories each providing a different perspective on the Gold Rush. We will be doing some internet research in class using www.calgoldrush.com to build our background knowledge before jumping into the stories. There is a new vocabulary list of 15 words posted on quizlet.com. There will be a quiz over these words on Friday. The words will also show up 3 or so at a time on story comprehension papers over this week and next.
In class this week we will be taking notes over and discussing two story devices, flashback and foreshadowing. We will use the short stories Lob's Girl and Jeremiah's Song to identify and explore each device to determine the effect of them on a reader's experience with the story. On Tuesday we will have a 20 question test over the vocabulary from the two short stories along with some comprehension questions. We will also have a comprehensive exam of many of the skills covered so far this year: fiction/nonfiction, characterization, inferencing, conflict, drawing conclusions, and theme. Parent-Teacher Conference
My available conference times are a little different so I wanted you to be aware!! I will be in my classroom from 3:30-5:30 Monday and from 3:30-6:15 Tuesday. Communication is very important and I want to answer any questions or concerns that you may have. I would be happy to meet with you before school, during my plan, or after school on another day if my altered time causes you to miss seeing me. I can also do an e-mail conference, just request that by emailing [email protected] I can be reached by remind message on your phone...OR if you would like for me to give you a quick call I would be happy to do so, just return the note handed out Monday in class. Progress reports will also be handed out Monday and will need to be signed and returned. We’ve gotten off to a great start this year and I appreciate your support. Our new reading series has been great, but very different from the one previously used. I've decided the "every two weeks" test schedule from last year, isn't moving things along as I'd like this year. SO...I'm adjusting. Our pace will be a little quicker. After today's vocabulary test, I handed out the next list which will be tested early next week. This will work well with our short week due to Fall Break. The link below will take you to these new words to study. THANKS!
In class this week we are covering the following OK Academic Standards:
-6.3.R.7 Students will analyze texts and ideas within and between texts and provide textual evidence to support their inferences. -6.3.R.5 Students will categorize facts included in an argument as for or against an issue. We will have a vocabulary test Wednesday over the words started last week. I've been changing around our assignment schedule a little to make things flow better in class. THE KIDS ARE DOING A GREAT JOB, KEEP IT UP! :) |
