I apologize about the lack of post last week! We read 3 texts about baseball and will continue the same theme this week with 2 more stories. We will have a baseball unit vocabulary test this FRIDAY... study the words on quizlet!!!! December book reports were due last Friday, December 2nd. Per the syllabus they are not allowed to be turned in late and recieve credit. I have graded 3 of the 5 periods so far, and I have about 29/75 book reports done and turned in correctly as directed in class.
This requires... 1. Take the AR Test (We go to the library every Thursday and they had time Friday just in case) 2. Write the book report 3. Hole-punch the book report, fill in the book log, and turn the folder into the box by 3:30 Friday. Some of that number just made small errors like not filling out the folder. However, I've record 16 zeros for reports and 23 zeros for not having taken a test. The book report due dates were given on the syllabus on the first day of school and are posted in two locations in the classroom. Students are reminded almost everyday, at the very least 3 times a week, to be working toward having them finished. We do not have assigned homework in my class, but on occaision reading will have to be done outside of class time in order to complete an AR book on time. Students are encouraged also not to wait until the last day in case an illness or unexpected absences happens on the day they are due. I'm hoping the percentages improve after grading the last two hours of reports, but at any rate student responsibility is not where it should be. I would be doing a disservice if there was nothing in my classroom cirriculum that fostered personal responsibility and being held accountable. They are just kids, therefore on a daily basis I extend grace and mercy. However, they will be young adults soon...not meeting deadlines will result in college rejection letters, failed job interviews, and missed opportunities. Please help me encourage them to do better and THANK you for supporting our classroom. Against my better judgement and contrary to my syllabus, I will be sending students to the library Monday to take tests without point deductions. I will accept book reports for 50% of the possible grade until Tuesday before first period begins. The next book report is due at the end of January. SHOUT OUT to all the students that stay on top of this routine. Some of them already have all 7 reports done and tests taken. I appreicate your dedication and self-motivation. :) |
